How to Choose a Raincoat for Your Dachshund
A practical guide to keeping little legs, long backs and muddy bellies drier on rainy walks.
RAINY-DAY WALKS · 5 MIN READ

Rainy walks should not mean bath time every day
Your dachshund still needs a walk when it rains. But after a few minutes on wet pavement, the belly is muddy, the legs are soaked, and you are facing another round of towels, cleaning and perhaps a bath. Not every dog enjoys being washed, and owners do not want to turn every rainy outing into a big cleanup.
The right raincoat cannot eliminate every splash, but it can make the routine much easier. The key is choosing protection that actually suits a dachshund, rather than simply buying a coat that looks waterproof.
1. Protect the belly, not just the back
A traditional cape-style raincoat covers the back while leaving much of the chest and underside exposed. For a dachshund, that is a particular problem: its low-slung body is close to puddles, wet grass and mud kicked up by its own paws.
Look for a full-coverage design that protects the chest, underside and legs, while leaving enough room for natural movement and toileting. A well-fitted four-leg rain suit can reduce how much water and dirt reach the coat underneath.
Paws, the face and other exposed areas may still need a wipe afterward. The benefit is less muddy fur to clean, not a promise of a completely dry dog.
2. Choose a cut made for a long back and short legs
Dachshunds are not simply small versions of taller dogs. A coat that fits the back may have sleeves that drag on the ground; a coat with the right leg length may pull across the chest or leave the rump exposed.
Look for a dachshund-friendly short-leg cut, cuffs that sit securely without squeezing, and adjustment points at the neck, body and back. These details help when a dog is especially slender, broad-chested or between typical proportions. The goal is a close but comfortable fit: no dragging fabric, no tightness at the joints and no restriction when walking or bending.

3. Waterproof fabric is only part of the story
A good raincoat needs more than water-repellent-looking fabric. Check whether the material has a documented waterproof rating, whether important seams are sealed, and whether the zipper is protected against water entry. Breathability matters too, especially for active dogs: a coat that traps too much heat and moisture can be uncomfortable.
The rain suit shown here is described by its supplier as using a waterproof, breathable membrane, taped key seams and a water-resistant zipper. Its published fabric specifications include a 15,000 mm hydrostatic-head rating and moisture permeability of at least 10,000 g/m²/24 h. These are supplier-stated figures, not independent Nekoan test results or a guarantee for the complete garment in every condition. Always choose layers appropriate to the weather and watch for overheating.

4. Make rainy-day walks simpler
A raincoat should be practical when your dog is eager to get outside. Useful details include a removable hood, adjustable openings, reflective trim and a closure that is straightforward to fasten.
For leash attachment, this design has a built-in collar connection point. It also has a covered opening on the back so a leash can connect to a separate harness worn underneath. The back opening is not an integrated harness. Choose the connection that is appropriate and secure for your dog; check the fit and hardware before every walk.

Measure first, then choose a size
Measure your dachshund while they stand naturally. Choose by proportions, using weight as a secondary guide.
- Chest girth: around the widest part of the chest.
- Back length: from the base of the neck near the shoulders to the base of the tail.
- Neck circumference: around the lower-to-middle part of the neck.
For this rain suit, add approximately 4–8 cm to a close chest measurement and compare the result with the garment chest measurement in the chart. Check back length and neck fit as well. S1–S4 are short-leg options; L5–L6 are long-leg options. Adjustment points refine a suitable size, but cannot replace correct sizing.

The best raincoat is the one your dog can actually walk in
Before deciding, imagine your dachshund taking a full walk: trotting, sniffing, turning and stepping over curbs. Does the coat stay in place? Are the legs free to move? Is the belly protected? Can your dog relieve itself comfortably? These questions matter more than a long list of features.
At Nekoan, we look for practical rainwear that helps make wet-weather walks less of a chore. Choose the coverage and fit that suit your dog. A little rain should not have to cancel the adventure.
A few quick answers
Are four-leg raincoats better for dachshunds?
They can offer more protection from belly and leg splashes. Choose one with short sleeves and enough room for comfortable movement.
Can my dachshund wear a harness under a raincoat?
Yes, when the coat has suitable harness access and enough room. Check the fit with the harness on, and connect the leash to the harness through the opening.
Will a raincoat prevent every post-walk bath?
It can reduce wet and muddy fur, but exposed areas may still need cleaning. Coverage and fit make the biggest difference to the cleanup routine.
